{"id":213,"date":"2022-03-11T17:34:05","date_gmt":"2022-03-11T17:34:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chinanews.lk\/?p=213"},"modified":"2022-03-11T17:34:07","modified_gmt":"2022-03-11T17:34:07","slug":"china-silent-on-sri-lankas-request-for-debt-waiver","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chinanews.lk\/index.php\/2022\/03\/11\/china-silent-on-sri-lankas-request-for-debt-waiver\/","title":{"rendered":"China silent on Sri Lanka\u2019s request for debt waiver"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>China once again kept mum on Sri Lanka\u2019s request for debt restructuring but said it has been assisting the island nation to the best of its ability to overcome its forex crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sri Lanka, which has emerged as a key foothold for China in the Indian Ocean region, is currently reeling under a severe foreign exchange crisis with falling reserves and the government is unable to foot the bill for essential imports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>China once again kept mum on Sri Lanka\u2019s request for debt restructuring but said it has been assisting the island nation to the best of its ability to overcome its forex crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sri Lanka, which has emerged as a key foothold for China in the Indian Ocean region, is currently reeling under a severe foreign exchange crisis with falling reserves and the government is unable to foot the bill for essential imports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last December, Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa requested Beijing\u2019s assistance in mitigating his country\u2019s deepening forex crisis and spiralling external debt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gotabaya in his meeting with the Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi raised Sri Lanka\u2019s deepening forex crisis and spiralling external debt and sought Beijing\u2019s assistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gotabaya pointed out that it would be a great relief to Sri Lanka if attention could be paid to restructuring the debt repayments as a solution to the economic crisis that has arisen in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is estimated that Sri Lanka owes debt payments to China in the region of USD 1.5 to 2 billion this year.
